Clay Treater Filters

Clay treaters are used in multi-product pipeline installations, and wherever surfactant-laden or disscoloured fuel is a problem.  The primary purpose of clay treatment is to protect aviation fuel filtration systems from trace quantities of surface active agents (surfactants), color and/or additives commonly found in fuel.  These unwanted contaminants may be present in fuel at the processing and refining plant or picked up from various transportation methods such as trucks, ships, and pipelines that carry several types of petroleum products in addition to jet fuel.  The contaminant compounds will accumulate and disarm the coalescer cartridge, reducing the water coalescing efficiency of a filtration system.

Clay treater filters come in either bag or canister form.  Canister form has a much higher maximum operating temperature (240F or 115C), whereas bags can only operate up to 140F or 60C.
